Reproduced again on this node today: with no session cookie, six app
ports answered HTTP 200 with their real UIs (18083 LND, 8334, 8175
Fedimint Guardian, 8336 FIPS Mesh, 8090, 7777), all bound 0.0.0.0 and so
served on every host address. Same bug class as the /lnd-connect-info
and /bitcoin-rpc/ leaks closed in v1.7.120, but across every app.
LAN, Tailscale, Tor and the FIPS mesh all converge on 127.0.0.1:<port>,
so this is one gate rather than four. It lives in the daemon rather than
a per-app sidecar (umbrel's app_proxy model): rootless, no extra
container per app, and it can reuse machinery that already exists.
It invents no authentication policy. verify_password, TOTP secret
decryption, verify_code with used-step replay protection, the session
store, and — importantly — the SAME LoginRateLimiter instance as the
JSON-RPC path, so an attacker cannot get a fresh budget of password
guesses by moving to an app port. Only the transport differs, an HTML
form instead of JSON-RPC, because a browser being sent to an app cannot
speak JSON-RPC.
2FA comes for free: a session still pending its TOTP step fails
validate(), so the gate rejects it without knowing what a second factor
is.
Details worth keeping:
- 401, not a redirect. A redirect to a login page is indistinguishable
from the app itself redirecting, and machine clients would follow it
and parse HTML as their API response.
- Cookie and Authorization are stripped before proxying. The app has no
use for the node session and must never be able to log or forward it.
- The challenge page names and pictures the app being opened, so the
visitor can confirm what they are authenticating to.
- device_tokens grew `apps: Option<Vec<String>>` and verify_for_app for
machine clients. None = node-wide, which every existing companion
token is; migrating them by guessing a scope would silently revoke
access nobody asked to revoke. An empty list is rejected rather than
minted, since it reads as unrestricted while authorising nothing.
The rollout is necessarily per-app and the gate is built to say so. A
container publishing 0.0.0.0:<port> claims every host address, so the
gate cannot bind that port until the app is pinned to bind: 127.0.0.1
and recreated — gate-first is impossible, and all-at-once would recreate
every container on a node simultaneously. Every port it cannot claim is
logged at warn each sweep and recorded in GateStatus::unprotected,
surfaced by security.app-gate-status. The failure mode being designed
against is a gate that binds nothing, logs at debug, and reports success
while every app stays exactly as open as before — worse than no gate,
because it stops anyone looking. Same reasoning that ruled out an
nft drop-in, whose absence is a silent no-op.
Not yet done: pinning the 39 gated ports to loopback, repointing
HiddenServicePort at the gate, and on-node verification.
Tests: 21/21 appgate, workspace builds clean.

Task 3, completing 01-04.
mesh.lightning-peers returns the peers that have advertised a Lightning
URI: filtered, deduplicated, deterministically ordered, and an empty
array rather than an error when nobody has — "nobody yet" is a normal
state on a fresh node, not a fault.
mesh.send-lightning-info advertises this node's own URI to ONE chosen
peer. There is deliberately no broadcast form: this discloses the node's
payment endpoint, and who learns it is the operator's choice rather than
a side effect of being in radio range (T-01-13). It refuses to send when
LND advertises no URI, instead of sending an empty one a peer would
store as an undialable target.
The list-building and target-parsing logic is extracted into pure
functions because this file has no handler test harness and the
handlers need a live mesh service. That keeps the three contracts that
actually matter provable rather than merely readable:
- dedup is keyed on identity_pubkey_hex() — the AUTHENTICATING key,
lowercased — never the firmware routing key, so a radio contact and
its federation twin collapse to one entry (T-01-11)
- "newest advertisement wins" compares PARSED RFC3339 timestamps, not
strings: 09:30-01:00 is later than 10:00Z while sorting earlier as
text, and there is a test that fails if that is ever string-compared
- ordering is name-then-contact_id and asserted byte-identical across
eight rotations of the input, because a HashMap's iteration order is
not stable and a picker that reshuffles between reads means an
operator can click a different node than the one they aimed at
The peer allow-list is untouched: server.rs has an empty diff and
is_peer_allowed_path still occurs 13 times (T-01-15).
Verified: cargo test -p archipelago 1087 passed / 0 failed; clippy
--all-targets clean in every touched module (two useless_format lints in
the new test code fixed, not waived).
The SUMMARY records one deviation honestly: Task 1's tests were written
alongside its implementation rather than before, so no pre-implementation
failing output exists. A mutation test was run in its place — disabling
the pubkey validation fails 3 of the 5 tests — which proves the
assertions bind, and the mutation was reverted and verified gone.

`handle_bitcoin_init_wallet_from_seed` derived the BIP-84 account extended
*private* key, stringified it, and imported `wpkh(xprv/0/*)` / `wpkh(xprv/1/*)`
into a Bitcoin Core descriptor wallet created with `disable_private_keys=false`
and an empty passphrase. That put a second copy of the node's spending key in
Core's `wallet.dat`, outside the daemon's Argon2 + ChaCha20-Poly1305 envelope.
That duplication into weaker protection was audit finding F-13 (High).
Deleted rather than rewritten watch-only (D-07b supersedes D-07/D-07a):
- No caller anywhere. Repo-wide search leaves exactly one occurrence of the
method name (its own dispatcher registration) and two of the symbol in code
(definition + dispatch call); every other hit is prose in docs.
- LND is the wallet the product drives. Across neode-ui/src every `bitcoin.*`
call is read-only status (getinfo/prune-status/onion); the wallet UI sends
via `lnd.sendcoins`.
- It never ran on archi-dev-box: no wallet named `archipelago` exists there,
and the one loaded wallet reports blank=true, keypoolsize=0, txcount=0.
- It was authenticated AND password-gated, so F-13 was key-at-rest
duplication, not an exposed endpoint.
No migration is performed and none is planned. This removes code, not wallets:
nothing on disk is touched, no funds move, no wallet.dat is modified. If a node
is ever found holding a wallet this handler created, that is a finding to
surface and stop on, not a trigger to auto-migrate.
`seed::derive_bitcoin_xprv` loses its only non-test caller and is retained
deliberately with `#[allow(dead_code)]` and a stated reason: it keeps its
existing test coverage and it is the derivation D-07c's deferred BDK cold vault
will need.
Records the evidence, the D-08/D-09 consequences and the D-07c deferral in
docs/security/KEY-03-SIGNING-POSTURE.md.

Both sides independently fixed the serial-alias dedup and the ESP32
boot-reset races; kept the branch's defer-to-auto-detect for unpinned
preferred paths (single probe pass per cycle) on top of main's
advert-name threading, Reticulum name propagation and radio-first
routing. Modal keeps main's 'Set Recommended' naming + probe progress
bar alongside the branch's in-app firmware flasher step.

Root causes found and fixed after live debugging on archi-dev-box (all
verified on real RNode hardware, archi-dev-box <-> archy-x250-dev E2E):
- probe_rnode raced the board's own boot: opening the port pulses DTR/RTS
through USB-UART bridges (CP2102/Heltec V3), the ESP32 power-cycles and
spends ~2.5-3s in boot ROM, and the KISS DETECT written 300ms after open
landed in the void — so an RNode could NEVER connect on these boards.
Now: immediate probe (fast path), then drain-until-quiet boot settle and
a second DETECT with a fresh response window.
- MeshService::configure() only restarted the listener on enable/disable —
device_kind/device_path/advert_name/RF-param changes were silent no-ops
until a full process restart (the setup modal's apply/keep-as-is did
nothing). Material config changes now bounce the listener; the open
sequence races the shutdown signal so stop() no longer burns the full
15s timeout mid-probe; mesh.configure applies in the background instead
of stalling every status poll behind the service write-lock.
- The mesh name was write-only: config.advert_name had no reader,
server.set-name never reached the mesh service, and Reticulum's
set_advert_name was a no-op (daemon display name fixed at spawn, and the
ARCHY:2 announce blob REPLACED the LXMF display name — every archy node
was anonymous on RNS). Now: advert_name > server name precedence feeds
the session, renames restart it live, the daemon gets --display-name at
spawn plus a set_name RPC verb, and announces carry the LXMF-standard
msgpack name with the identity blob appended as an extra list element
stock clients (Sideband/NomadNet) ignore.
- Dead reticulum-daemon was invisible for up to 30min (RX-stall watchdog):
child exit / RPC-EOF now fails try_recv_frame so the session reconnects.
- Setup modal re-trigger loop: plugged_at used the tty node's mtime, which
bumps on every open — each probe invalidated the dismissal key. Use
btime/ctime (only change on real plugs).
- ARCHY:2 identity adverts (re-emitted every 60s over Reticulum) stomped
the federation twin's real name with a synthetic Archy-… placeholder and
nulled its position; blob-only announces no longer assert a name, blob
strings can never become display names, and stale blob names are healed
at peers.json load.
- mesh.broadcast on Meshtastic sent heartbeat+time only (no identity);
SendAdvert now also fires a want_response NodeInfo broadcast.
- New mesh.refresh RPC: actively re-queries the radio contact table (the
UI Refresh button previously only re-read server caches).
- Reticulum peers now track last_advert (announce time) and mark existing
peers reachable on inbound traffic.
- Boot auto-enable no longer force-enables mesh when an operator
explicitly disabled it (only fires when no config file exists).

Slow multi-hop payments (>15s routing) surfaced as "Payment failed"
while LND settled them in the background: the shared LND REST client's
15s total timeout aborted the synchronous /v1/channels/transactions
wait, and every UI path treated that abort as a definitive failure. The
payment then succeeded anyway and only appeared in history on the next
background poll.
Backend: lnd.payinvoice now decodes the invoice up front for its payment
hash, pays on a dedicated 120s client, and answers status:"pending" with
the hash (never an error) when the wait elapses after the payment was
handed to LND — only a pre-connect failure is still a hard error. New
lnd.paymentstatus RPC reports succeeded/failed/in_flight (with humanized
failure reasons) from /v1/payments.
Frontend: new rpcClient.payLightningInvoice() pays then polls
lnd.paymentstatus to a real terminal state (3s interval, up to 2 min);
all five call sites (send modal, scan modal, web5 unified send, peer-file
purchase, app-launcher payments) migrated. Failure is only shown when LND
itself declares FAILED; a still-settling payment shows an in-flight state
and success fires the transaction refresh.

- sats/BTC unit toggle on the on-chain amount field with live conversion
hint; canonical value stays sats end-to-end
- Fast / Standard / Slow fee presets (1 / 6 / 144 block targets) plus a
custom pane taking target blocks or an explicit sat/vB rate
- confirm pane shows LND's fee estimate for the chosen speed via the new
lnd.estimatefee RPC (GET /v1/transactions/fee)
- lnd.sendcoins now accepts target_conf / sat_per_vbyte with the same
mutual-exclusion + range validation as channel opens
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- lnd.closedchannels: closed-channel history via /v1/channels/closed
- channel list now includes waiting-close and force-closing pending
channels with their closing_txid
- closechannel reads the close stream's first update with a dedicated
client instead of hanging until the closing tx confirms; returns the
closing txid in display byte order
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- LND watchdog: framework-pt's LND sat wedged 14h (RPC up, server never
ready, channels inactive) with nothing noticing. 15 consecutive bad
minutes now bounce the container automatically (30min cooldown) —
silent multi-hour Lightning outages become self-healed blips.
- Send modal: Auto tab hidden; Ecash splits into Cashu and Fedi (new
wallet.fedimint-send RPC wrapping the existing spend_from_any); both
rails render the generated token as a scannable QR alongside the
copyable text.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- auth.createDeviceToken / listDeviceTokens / revokeDeviceToken RPCs; only
SHA-256 hashes persist in data_dir/device-tokens.json
- auth.login accepts {token} (same rate limiter, skips TOTP like remember-me)
- pairing QR now carries name (server name, fallback "My Archipelago"),
tok (instant login), and FIPS mesh params from new fips.pair-info RPC
(npub, fips0 ULA, transport ports)
- companion onboarding drops the WireGuard install/tunnel screens — remote
access moves to the FIPS mesh embedded in the companion app
- fix: fips daemon UDP bind now 2121, matching the published container port
and fleet rosters (was upstream's 8668 — inbound UDP was dead on bridged
installs, mesh silently rode TCP 8443)
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Plugging in any LoRa radio now surfaces the device setup modal EVERY time
(dismissals clear on unplug; works while mesh is enabled; 2-poll debounce
so ordinary reconnect blips don't flash it), showing what's currently on
the stick before anything is written:
- mesh.probe-device RPC: identifies the firmware read-only in the same
Reticulum->Meshcore->Meshtastic order as auto-detect. Meshtastic yields
region/modem-preset/channels (want_config is a read); MeshCore yields
name/node-id + firmware version via the previously-unused
CMD_DEVICE_QUERY; RNode via the bare KISS DETECT (no daemon spawn).
Path must be a detected candidate port; the live session's port refuses.
- "Keep As Is": manage_radio=false persists in MeshConfig and the session
skips every on-connect config write (region, channel, PHY params, advert
name) — the radio runs exactly as flashed, hot-swappable.
- "Set Up with Archipelago Settings": second screen shows the params that
will be applied (channel, region, the node's persisted RF params - e.g.
the validated Portugal preset - with the per-region community plan as
fallback) before writing anything.
- Stale-type fix: disconnect now resets device_type/firmware_version, so
a swapped stick no longer shows the previous radio's firmware; probed
kind pins device_kind so the right probe runs first on connect.

system.kiosk-display.get/set RPCs write /etc/archipelago/kiosk-display.conf
(sourced by the kiosk launcher) and try-restart the kiosk so the choice
applies immediately. The Settings section only appears on nodes that have
the kiosk unit installed.

barkd (Ark wallet daemon, pinned 0.3.0, checksum-verified release binary)
packaged as an installable app; thin HTTP bridge in wallet/ark_client.rs
mirrors the fedimint_client pattern — the bark SDK stays out of the node
binary. wallet.ark-* RPCs cover status/balance/address/send/invoice/
board/offboard/history/configure; Ark movements merge into the unified
ecash history (kind="ark") and spendable Ark sats into total_sats.
Signet defaults (Second's public Ark server) until Ark matures.

Invites carried no trust level, and both accept_invite and the
peer-joined handler hardcoded TrustLevel::Trusted — so 'Invite a Peer'
(Observer) federated both sides as fully Trusted.
- invite codes now carry a 'trust' field (legacy codes parse as Trusted)
- federation.invite accepts trust_level: trusted|observer
- accept_invite assigns the invite's level on the acceptor side
- peer-joined resolves the granted level authoritatively by matching the
acceptor's echoed invite token against our stored outgoing invites;
the peer's own unsigned claim is honored only as a downgrade, so no
escalation is possible
- discovery/connection-request approvals mint Observer invites directly
(the post-hoc demotion in handshake.rs stays as a legacy safety net)
- asymmetry self-heal re-asserts at the locally-held level
Tests: observer threading + legacy default-trusted parse.

- aezeed words are now captured at BOTH wallet-init paths and stored
encrypted (Argon2 + ChaCha20-Poly1305, per-node wallet secret) at
identity/lnd_aezeed.enc; ack marker cleared when a wallet is recreated
- lnd.init-wallet-from-seed was posting seed_entropy to /v1/initwallet,
which is a GenSeed field — the wallet was never actually derived from
the master seed; now GenSeed(entropy) → InitWallet(words)
- new RPCs: lnd.seed-backup-status / lnd.seed-reveal (password + 2FA
gated, same as seed.reveal via shared verify_reveal_auth) /
lnd.seed-backup-ack
- LND app detail page: Lightning-seed card with first-launch backup
prompt, tap-to-reveal modal, 'I've backed it up' acknowledgment
Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- new lnd.lightning-history RPC: settled invoices (incoming) + succeeded
payments (outgoing) normalized to the wallet-transaction shape; on-chain
history stays in lnd.gettransactions
- Home merges on-chain + lightning + ecash history into one sorted list;
every entry now carries kind (onchain/lightning/cashu/fedimint)
- modal renders a rail badge for non-onchain rows instead of a bogus
confirmation count, and only on-chain rows link into mempool

Peers that opt in via a new "Share Location" toggle in Settings
(server.set-location RPC) get plotted on other trusted peers' Mesh Map
with a distinct Archy-logo marker, separate from raw LoRa radio peers.
Location is persisted locally, carried in NodeStateSnapshot, and
propagated through federation sync/delta like other node state.

- reticulum.rs: send_text_msg was lossy-UTF8-mangling binary CBOR control
envelopes (ReadReceipt etc.) before sending as LXMF text; base64-encode
with a marker instead, decoded losslessly on receive.
- typed_messages.rs: mesh.send-read-receipt fired automatically on every
chat view with no is_archy_peer gate, so viewing a message from a stock
(non-archy) LXMF peer auto-sent it an undecodable control envelope,
surfacing as garbage text right after whatever it just sent. Now a no-op
for non-archy peers.
- mesh/listener/mod.rs: RX_STALL_TIMEOUT was 300s and forced a full
auto-detect reconnect on any otherwise-healthy but quiet mesh link
(visible as "Connecting..." flapping); this also wiped Reticulum's
in-memory peer-address table every cycle, breaking messaging with peers
who hadn't re-announced in the window. Bumped to 1800s.
- reticulum.rs: persist the peer prefix/dest-hash/display-name table to
disk so a restart doesn't force every peer back to "Anonymous Peer"
until they re-announce.
- decode.rs/frames.rs: Meshcore was discarding the SNR its wire format
carries; wire it onto the peer record. Mesh.vue's signalBars() now falls
back to SNR-based bars when RSSI is unavailable (always true for
Meshcore); Reticulum has neither and correctly stays at 0/"no data".
- system/handlers.rs, dispatcher.rs: new system.get-hostname RPC + cert
regeneration (with a proper SAN) whenever server.set-name changes the
hostname, so HTTPS doesn't add a mismatch warning on top of the
self-signed one after a rename.
- AccountInfoSection.vue: surface the mDNS hostname + http/https links in
Settings (HTTPS needed for mic/camera secure-context features) — never
forced, both keep working.
- build-auto-installer-iso.sh: ship avahi-daemon so .local names actually
resolve on the LAN, and give the self-signed cert a real SAN instead of
a bare CN, both at image-build and install-time-fallback.
- Mesh.vue/MediaLightbox.vue/mesh-styles.css: mic/attach-stack no longer
closes on a plain hover-past; mesh images open in the shared lightbox
and have a real download button; lightbox close button moves to
bottom-center on mobile instead of under the status bar; mesh device
panel gets the same height/padding as its sibling tabs.
Verified: 108/108 mesh unit tests, deployed + confirmed healthy on
.116/.198/.228 (matching binary hash across all three), live Reticulum
messaging confirmed working end-to-end post-deploy.

New RPC methods:
- openwrt.scan-wifi: triggers iwinfo scan on the router radio,
returns networks sorted by signal strength
- openwrt.configure-wan: creates UCI wireless.wwan (sta mode) +
network.wwan (DHCP) + adds wwan to firewall WAN zone, then
calls `wifi reload`
get-status now includes a `wan` object with configured/ssid/ip/
internet fields so the UI can show current uplink state.
Frontend WAN panel: scan → pick SSID (signal bars) → enter password
→ apply. Shows "Configure WAN first" hint above TollGate install
button when internet is not available.

Backend: new `openwrt.get-status` RPC endpoint SSHes into the saved (or
provided) OpenWrt router and returns system info, TollGate config, and WiFi
AP interfaces via UCI.
Frontend: new OpenWrtGateway.vue view at /dashboard/server/openwrt shows
system hostname, OpenWrt version, uptime, TollGate install/enable state with
pricing and mint URL, and all AP-mode WiFi interfaces. Linked from the Local
Network section of the Server view.

New `archipelago-openwrt` workspace crate provides SSH/UCI-based management
of OpenWrt routers, including automated TollGate installation and configuration
of a pay-as-you-go "archipelago" SSID backed by the local Cashu mint.
Exposes two RPC endpoints:
- `openwrt.scan` — discover OpenWrt routers on the LAN
- `openwrt.provision-tollgate` — install tollgate-module-basic-go, write UCI
config (TIP-01/TIP-02), and create isolated WiFi SSID + firewall zone
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- send_message now sends archy↔archy plain text as a native TEXT_MESSAGE_APP
DM (firmware PKC-encrypts E2E), not wrapped in the binary typed envelope
that silently broke archy↔archy LoRa delivery. Archy peers' Sent rows are
marked encrypted so the E2E pill shows; rich typed msgs still use the
typed-wire path.
- Add a software radio-reboot to recover a wedged/RX-deaf radio without
physical access (and for the Device-tab settings panel): driver reboot()
via AdminMessage reboot_seconds=97 (verified vs meshtastic/protobufs),
MeshCommand::RebootRadio, MeshService::reboot_radio, RPC mesh.reboot-radio.
- Handoff doc: docs/SESSION-1.8.0-OTA-PROGRESS.md "RESUME HERE" — RF link is
the proven blocker (radios not hearing each other); modem_preset mismatch
is the prime suspect; on-device Meshtastic-app check + fix plan documented.

Buyer-side paid downloads now persist: purchases are cached on disk
(content_owned.rs) keyed by (seller onion, content_id), the gallery shows
an "Owned" badge unblurred, and items view/play in-app from the local
cache with no re-payment or reliance on a browser download (which
silently failed on the mobile companion). New RPCs content.owned-list /
content.owned-get. Validated e2e .116<-.198 (paid 100 sats via Fedimint,
166KB jpeg returns, survives restart).
fedimint-clientd manifest: restore the standard container capability set
(CHOWN/DAC_OVERRIDE/FOWNER/SETUID/SETGID) so fmcd's startup chown of an
existing-federation /data succeeds instead of dying EPERM (#7). Confirmed
the orchestrator applies these to the running container.
FIPS perf: tighten the supervisor warm-path keepalive 45s -> 25s so peer
paths stay inside the ~30-60s NAT cold window. Dials now reliably land on
FIPS instead of re-punching and falling back to Tor. Measured to the same
peer: cloud browse 18-22s -> 0.4s; full Fedimint paid download 29s -> 11s
(residual is the seller-side guardian reissue round-trip).

Adds the assistant scheduler, MeshAssistantPanel UI, and the remaining
config-RPC / live-toggle / Ollama-detect wiring on top of Phase 1.x.

Phase 2 backend. AssistantConfig is now live-updatable (RwLock) so the UI
toggle applies without a listener restart. New RPCs:
- mesh.assistant-status -> {enabled, model, trusted_only, default_model,
ollama_detected, models[]} (probes local Ollama :11434/api/tags)
- mesh.assistant-configure -> set enabled/model/trusted_only live + persist
MeshService::assistant_config / configure_assistant. Compiles clean.

Make each peer file card a flex column filling its grid cell (flex flex-col

Extend the async-spawn treatment previously shipped for Stop/Start/Restart
to the three remaining long-running lifecycle RPCs. Each wrapper validates
params, rejects duplicate in-flight ops, flips state to the transitional
variant (Installing/Removing/Updating), then spawns the existing inner
handler on tokio. RPC returns immediately with { status, package_id }; the
spawn task owns the terminal state write.
Install and update success arms explicitly set state=Running. The scan
loop merge (merge_preserving_transitional) refuses to overwrite
transitional states, so the spawn task must write the terminal state.
Uninstall's inner handler removes the entry entirely, so no explicit
terminal write is needed there.
Dispatcher and handler now thread self as Arc<Self> / &Arc<Self> so
spawned tasks can hold their own Arc without extra field cloning.
Transient install entry uses empty icon string. Hardcoding
/assets/img/app-icons/<id>.png 404s for apps that ship .svg or .webp
assets, which produces a broken-image flicker until the scanner refreshes
with manifest data. Empty string causes the frontend's icon computed to
fall through to the curated map, which has correct extensions.
Removed the inner "already updating" guard in update.rs — the wrapper
now owns duplicate-op detection for all three operations.
RPC handlers no longer block on podman operations. container-stop on
bitcoin-core used to hold the connection for up to 600s while the UI
showed a frozen spinner; it now returns in under a second with
{status: stopping} after flipping the package state to Stopping and
broadcasting over WebSocket. Same treatment for container-start and
the new container-restart route.
Widens container-list state mapping to emit the transitional variants
(stopping, starting, restarting, installing, updating, removing,
installed, and the backup states) instead of collapsing them to
"unknown". Keeps the mapping in sync with the UI ContainerStatus.state
union so the dashboard can render the right transitional label.
Mirrors the treatment in package/runtime.rs for package.start,
package.stop, and package.restart. The body of each handler is lifted
into pure do_package_* helpers that the background task runs; state
flipping is bracketed around the spawn with revert on error. The
pre-existing post-start exit-check verification and restart stop+start
fallback run inside the spawned task, not the RPC body.
Adds container-restart route to the dispatcher. mark_user_stopped
continues to run BEFORE the spawn, preserving the ordering contract
with the crash recovery layer at runtime.rs:145-148.
- New Settings → App registries page (/dashboard/settings/registries)
that mirrors the update-mirrors experience: list of configured
registries, test reachability, set primary, add/remove. New
registry.set-primary RPC; existing registry.{list,add,remove,test}
reused.
- Default RegistryConfig flipped: VPS (23.182.128.160:3000/lfg2025) is
now Server 1 (primary), tx1138 is Server 2 (fallback).
- Install pipeline now rewrites the first pull to the primary registry
URL before attempting it. Before this, installs always hit whichever
registry the image was hardcoded to, so changing the primary didn't
actually affect where images came from. On failure, the existing
fallback walk skips the primary (already tried) and walks the rest.
- App catalog proxy UPSTREAMS order flipped so the catalog follows the
same VPS-first rule.
- Reboot overlay: animated "a" logo now sits in the center of the ring
(matches the screensaver composition). Extracted the logo-wrapper
pattern inline.
7/7 registry tests pass.

- New "Served by {mirror}" line on the System Update page so operators can see
which mirror actually served the available manifest (vs. which is configured
primary). Backend threads the served URL through UpdateState.manifest_mirror.
- New update.test-mirror RPC + per-row lightning-bolt button that pings a
mirror and renders reachable/latency or error inline under the URL.
- UI polish on the mirrors section: Set Primary, Remove, and the new Test
action are compact icon buttons; add-mirror form moved into a dialog.
- "What's New" block prepended for v1.7.27-alpha.
21/21 update module tests pass. vue-tsc + vite build clean.

Adds a multi-mirror manifest fetch. `check_for_updates` walks a
configurable list (data_dir/update-mirrors.json) in priority order
and falls through to the next mirror on any HTTP / parse / timeout
failure. Two defaults bake in: Server 1 (git.tx1138.com) and Server 2
(23.182.128.160:3000).
Critical fix: after parsing a manifest, rewrite every component's
`download_url` so its origin matches the manifest URL we fetched.
Before this, the manifest hard-coded absolute URLs pointing at one
specific server — so even when a node fetched the manifest from a
faster mirror, the actual 200MB download went back to the slow
original. Now the faster mirror wins end-to-end.
New RPCs: update.list-mirrors, update.add-mirror, update.remove-mirror,
update.set-primary-mirror. New UI section on the System Update page
for operator management. 5 new unit tests for origin parsing and
manifest rewriting (21/21 green).

Adds a local seed-anchor list at <data_dir>/seed-anchors.json. Each
entry is {npub, address, transport, label}. On archipelago startup
and every 5 minutes the list is pushed into the running fips daemon
via `fipsctl connect <npub> <addr> <transport>`, so a cluster can
anchor itself independently of the global fips.v0l.io. A flaky or
unreachable public anchor no longer strands a fresh install.
New RPCs:
- fips.list-seed-anchors
- fips.add-seed-anchor (validates npub1… + host:port)
- fips.remove-seed-anchor
- fips.apply-seed-anchors (on-demand re-dial)
New standalone UI card at views/server/FipsSeedAnchorsCard.vue. Not
wired into Home.vue / Server.vue — operator places it per the
entry-point convention.

Install UX
SystemUpdate.vue now shows a full-screen overlay after apply: the
BitcoinFaceAscii logo, a target-version label, an indeterminate
progress stripe (solid orange; solid green on ready), and an
elapsed-time readout. Polls /health every 1.5s and auto-reloads
once the backend reports the new version. 3-min stall → "Reload
now" button. Download UI also shows a spinner + "Finishing
download — verifying checksum…" while the fake bar sits at 95%.
FIPS reconnect — for real this time
New fips.reconnect RPC does stop → start → wait 20s → re-poll →
classify. Classification buckets: connected / daemon_down /
no_seed_key / no_outbound_udp_or_anchor_down / peers_but_no_anchor,
each with a plain-language hint surfaced verbatim by the Reconnect
button. The real reason nodes like .198/.253 couldn't reach the
anchor: identity::write_fips_key_from_seed was writing fips_key.pub
as a bech32 npub TEXT file, but upstream fips expects 32 raw
bytes. The daemon silently authenticated with garbage. Fix:
PublicKey::to_bytes() → raw 32 bytes, and new
fips::config::normalize_pub_file migrates legacy files by decoding
the npub and rewriting in place. fips.reconnect also re-installs
the config + healed keys to /etc/fips before restarting.
AIUI preservation + restore
apply_update was wiping /opt/archipelago/web-ui/aiui because the
Vue build doesn't include it — every OTA lost the Claude sidebar.
The preserve block now copies aiui/ + archipelago-companion.apk
from the old web-ui into the staging dir before the swap, and
prefers new-tar versions if present. To restore it on the three
nodes that already lost it (.116/.198/.253), this release bundles
the 85 MB aiui build into the frontend tarball. Frontend component
size is now ~155 MB.
Download / install timeouts
Backend download client timeout 1800s → 3600s (1 h). Larger
tarball + slow gitea raw throughput put us above the old cap.
Frontend update.download rpc timeout 30 min → 65 min to match.
package.install rpc timeout 15 min → 45 min — IndeedHub pulls
6 images and was timing out mid-install.
UI nit
"Rollback to Previous" → "Rollback Available".
App-catalog proxy already landed in v1.7.13.

Previously the Pending Peer Requests panel only had Approve/Reject for
inbound rows; outbound rows in the 'sent' state had no action and
would sit there until the target explicitly approved or rejected. Now
you can Cancel an outbound request — the local row is dropped and a
PeerCancel nostr DM is sent so the target's inbound row also
disappears.
Backend:
- HandshakeMessage::PeerCancel {reason: Option<String>} variant.
- nostr_handshake::send_peer_cancel() mirrors send_peer_reject.
- handshake.poll handler dispatches inbound PeerCancel: finds the
matching inbound pending row (same from_nostr_pubkey, state=Pending)
and deletes it. Reply shape gains `cancelled_inbound: [id]`.
- federation::pending::delete() — hard-remove (set_state only
transitions; we don't want 'Cancelled' ghosts in the audit trail).
- federation.cancel-request RPC: outbound+Sent only, default
notify=true (cancelling silently is a footgun), best-effort DM
(relay failure doesn't block local deletion). Wired in dispatcher.
Frontend:
- PendingRequestsPanel.vue: Cancel button appears only on
outbound+sent rows. Emits 'cancel' event with request id.
- Federation.vue: cancelPending(id) handler calls
rpcClient.federationCancelRequest and reloads the list.
- rpcClient.federationCancelRequest(id, reason?, notify=true).

Adds a user-configurable toggle for how each peer-to-peer service
reaches federated peers. Three options per service:
- Auto (default) — FIPS preferred, Tor fallback (current behavior).
- FIPS only — fail rather than fall through to Tor.
- Tor only — explicit opt-in to onion anonymity for that service.
Services covered (matching the UI rows):
- Federation — state sync, invites, peer notifications
- Peers — address/DID rotation broadcasts
- Peer Files — content catalog download/browse/preview
- Messaging — archipelago channel + mesh bridge
- Mesh File Sharing — content_ref blob fetches
Implementation:
- settings::transport — persisted struct + process-wide OnceLock handle
(so deep call sites don't need data_dir threaded through signatures).
On-disk file: <data_dir>/settings/transport_preferences.json; missing
or corrupt → defaults (Auto everywhere).
- settings::transport::init() called from main.rs after config load.
- fips::dial::PeerRequest gains a .service(kind) builder; send_* checks
the preference before choosing a transport. FIPS-only fails loudly
when FIPS is unavailable (so users who pick it know when something
falls back).
- Every FIPS-first migration site tags its PeerRequest with the
matching PeerService so the toggle actually applies.
- transport.preferences + transport.set-preference RPCs added; wired
into the dispatcher.
- neode-ui/src/views/settings/TransportPrefsCard.vue — standalone card
with a 5-row Auto/FIPS/Tor tri-state. Not wired into Settings.vue —
the user places components themselves (see feedback_ui_entry_points).

Bakes the FIPS (Free Internetworking Peering System) mesh daemon into
the node stack, supervised by archipelago alongside Tor. Runs as a
system service, identity derives from the same BIP-39 master seed, and
user-triggered updates track upstream main.
Identity
seed.rs: new HKDF label archipelago/fips/secp256k1/v1 → dedicated
secp256k1 key, distinct from the Nostr-node key for crypto isolation
but still seed-recoverable
identity.rs: writes fips_key[.pub] to /data/identity on onboarding,
chmod 0600; fips_key_exists / load_fips_keys / fips_npub accessors
Transport
TransportKind::Fips=3 inserted between LAN and Tor (Tor bumps to 4)
→ router prefers FIPS over Tor for all peer traffic
PeerRecord gains fips_npub + last_fips fields (serde(default) for
backward-compat with older nodes)
transport/fips.rs: NodeTransport stub, reports unavailable until the
daemon is live so router falls through to Tor cleanly
Federation invites
FederatedNode and FederationInvite carry optional fips_npub
create_invite / accept_invite / peer-joined callback thread it end
to end; signature domain deliberately unchanged — FIPS Noise does
its own session auth, so the unsigned hint only affects path
selection
crate::fips
config.rs: renders /etc/fips/fips.yaml and sudo-installs key material
service.rs: systemctl status/activate/restart/mask wrappers
update.rs: GitHub API check against upstream main; apply stubbed
until per-commit .deb artefact source is decided
RPC + dashboard
fips.status / fips.check-update / fips.apply-update / fips.install /
fips.restart registered in dispatcher
HomeNetworkCard.vue shipped standalone (unmounted — place in Home.vue
when ready); shows state pill, version, FIPS npub, update button,
activate button when key is present but service is down
ISO + systemd
archipelago-fips.service: conditional on key presence, masked by
default — backend unmasks after onboarding writes the key
build-auto-installer-iso.sh: multi-stage Dockerfile builds the FIPS
.deb from jmcorgan/fips main (fail-loud), COPYs it into rootfs, apt
installs it so trixie resolves deps; unit copied + masked
Version bump: 1.3.5 → 1.4.0
Tests: 33 new/updated passing (seed, identity, transport, federation,
fips module, transport::fips).
Known gaps: fips.apply-update returns a clear stub error until
upstream publishes per-commit .deb artefacts; HomeNetworkCard is not
mounted in Home.vue by default.

The .github/workflows/ci.yml Rust job runs cargo fmt --check, clippy
with -D warnings, and tests. All three were failing. This commit:
- Applies rustfmt across the tree (the bulk of the diff — untouched
since the last toolchain bump, so a wide sweep was unavoidable).
- Fixes the correctness-level clippy errors:
container/bitcoin_simulator.rs wildcard-in-or-pattern
container/manifest.rs from_str rename to parse (reserved name)
container/podman_client.rs .get(0) -> .first()
container/runtime.rs manual += collapse
archipelago/src/constants.rs doc-comment → module-doc
api/rpc/package/install.rs stray /// comment above a non-item
container/docker_packages.rs redundant field init
streaming/advertisement.rs missing Metric import in tests
tests/orchestration_tests.rs `vec!` in non-Vec contexts
mesh/listener/dispatch.rs unused store_plain_message import
api/rpc/tor/mod.rs and mesh/steganography.rs: push-after-new → vec!
- Quiets wide legacy surfaces with crate-level allows in main.rs for
stylistic lints (too_many_arguments, type_complexity, doc indent,
enum variant prefix, wildcard-in-or, assertions-on-constants,
drop_non_drop, unused_io_amount, ptr_arg) — these fired in dozens
of places with no correctness payoff and have been churning every
toolchain bump.
- Tags intentional-dead-code helpers: wallet/ and streaming/ modules
are WIP, mesh::send_chunked_payload and DM_V1_MARKER are kept for
rollback compatibility, vpn::get_nostr_vpn_status is surface-area
for a not-yet-landed RPC.
cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --all-targets --all-features
-- -D warnings, and cargo test --all-features now all pass locally.
